Social Networking Analysis

After the study of last 3 lectures, I have learnt some important concepts about the social network analysis (SNA) and known how to use the calculation method like matrix or formulas to deal with the actual problems during our social-networking life. Here I will take an example to share with you and I really expect to hear your comments.
Firstly, I got to know that Social Network Analysis is the study of the pattern of interaction between actors. A social network is a group of collaborating individuals or entities that are related to each other, and in SNA, Social Network is formally defined as a set of social actors, or nodes, members that are connected by one or more types of relations. During the three lectures what impressed most is that Prof. Chan showed us the sociogram of our blogosphere to let us find the interaction of our own to others’ blogs and we can easily find that Su Jing and Helei Cui are the most two prominent actors with other students for they are in the middle of the sociogram.
However, what is sociogram and how to make the sociogram is really a question that need to be answer. Sociogram is a graphical representation of social networks. Some other phenomenons in our daily can be explain by sociogram such as weibo and blog. I think that everyone is familiar with the scenes below and this is social networking. Next I want to discuss how to achieve the sociagram with the example in the following.
A Simple Social Network
 Graphical representation (sociogram)
·A Simple Social Network
Denote the set of g actors by N={n1,n2,…ng,},for the ordered pair <ni, nj>, define xij as the value of the tie from the ni (the ith actor) to nj (the jth actor) on the relation.
· Actor Centrality and Actor Prestige
Actor centrality: Prominent actors are those that are extensively involved in relationships with other actors.
Centralized and decentralized network
 General centralization index:

Actor degree centrality:
Define CD(ni) as an actor-level degree centrality index:

The normalized actor degree centrality:

There are three types of exercise about Group Closeness Centralization:

So with these formulas and methods above, we can easily find the relationship between people in social networking as well as find the prominence. However, I need to learn more about SNA because it can help us know social networking better.

  1. a good summary of the last lecture provided in your blog. It helps me reviewing very much.
However, hope you can give us some detailed calculated example which will help us more.

  2. A good blog to learn about basic knowledge of social network analysis and sociogram. They are very important for us to do further research in the field of social networking.

  3. A great summary of the previous lecture in Social Network Analysis. "I need to learn more about SNA because it can help us know social networking better.". The power of SNA has just been revealed in recent year. But one little thing I'd like to mention that SNA is also the best way to let computer understand social network better :)

  4. From this essay I know that Social Network Analysis(SNA) is the study of the pattern of interaction between actors, and there would be 3 centrality calculations to analyse it. It would be better if some calculations are demonstrated for the 3 types of exercises in order to let readers know more how the centrality comes with the formulas given.

  5. Many functions or applications runs on the Social Network are based on SNA, for example, the friend-recommendation system in RenRen and Weibo, it will take both the relationship and prestige of the person into consideration ( and tags , currently). I believe that if we dig deeper into the field of SNA , we can develop more applications and slove more problems.

  6. hi~ you make a good summary on social network analysis! From your statement i know you have already gained a completed understanding on SNA. as we can see, in the inside of online social website, there are loads of information which could be collected and analyzed, and we can apply these analyzing measures for various fields and benefit people.

  7. Wow, your math calculation about Social network analysis is amazing, which helps me understand SNA theory a lot. For further interchanging, I think Social network analysis views social relationships in terms of network theory, consisting of nodes (representing individual actors within the network) and ties (which represent relationships between the individuals, such as friendship, kinship, organizational position, sexual relationships. Your point is so deep-going that I'm expecting for a exchanging with you~
